چکیده

The rapid crossing of the solar equatorial region by Ulysses as it returned from the south pole resulted in 7 crossings of the heliospheric current sheet between 10“S and 20”N and 10 distinct solar wind interaction regions between 18“S and 22”N. Both the extent of the current sheet and the latitude interval containing the interaction regions are a f~ctor of= 2 less than were observed by Ulysses when it left the equatorial region in 1993. A map of the curxent sheet in heliographic latitude and Barrington longitude reveals two folds corresponding to 4 magnetic sectors. The coronal holes associated with the sectors, the interaction regions ancl high-speed streams have been identified, Two sectors were associated with a pair of asymmetrically-placed polar coronal holes whereas the other two sectors coincided with a pair of near-equ:itoria] coronal holes on opposite sides of the equator.

The Ulysses fast latitude scans: COSPIN/KET results

Ulysses, launched in October 1990, began its second out-of-ecliptic orbit in December 1997, and its second fast latitude scan in September 2000. In contrast to the first fast latitude scan in 1994/1995, during the second fast latitude scan solar activity was close to maximum. The solar magnetic field reversed its polarity around July 2000. While the first latitude scan mainly gave a snapshot of...

Modelling cosmic ray intensities along the Ulysses trajectory

Time dependent cosmic ray modulation in the inner heliosphere is studied by comparing results from a 2D, time-dependent cosmic ray transport model with Ulysses observations. A compound approach, which combines the effects of the global changes in the heliospheric magnetic field magnitude with drifts to establish a realistic timedependence, in the diffusion and drift coefficients, are used. We s...

ICME Observations During the Ulysses Fast Latitude Scan

Between November 2000 and October 2001 the Ulysses spacecraft performed a fast traversal of the heliospheric latitudes between 80°S and 80°N, a period close to the activity maximum of the current solar cycle. This paper provides an overview of the Ulysses observations of the transient solar wind structures associated with coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) during this period. Compared to the previo...

Ulysses Observations of the Radial M Agnetic Field Component: Absence of a Lajttude Gradient

The radial component of the solar magnetic field measured at Ulysses as it traveled from the equator in the southern hemisphere has been to -80.2” latitude and returned. The radial component multiplied by the square of the radial distance, i.e., BRr2, averaged over 77 day intervals (three solar rotations) is approximately constant at -3.5 NT and shows no evidence of a dependence on heliographic...

A study of magnetic fluctuations and their anomalous scaling in the solar wind: the Ulysses fast-latitude scan

The solar wind is a highly turbulent and intermittent medium at frequencies between 10−4 and 10−1 Hz. Power spectra are used to look at fluctuations in the components of the magnetic field at high frequencies over a wide range of latitudes. Results show steady turbulence in the polar regions of the Sun and a more varied environment in the equatorial region. The magnetic field fluctuations exhib...
